The promise of AI design is speed. But how much faster is it, really? Not in theory. Not in marketing copy. In practice, with a stopwatch, on real commercial design tasks.
We ran the experiment. Here's what happened.

The Setup
Designer: One operator, 7 years of professional design experience. Proficient in Canva (daily user since 2019). Proficient in Lovart (6 months of daily use). No bias — they use both tools in their freelance practice.
Three tasks — the most common small-business design briefs, per our survey of 500 users:
- Instagram Carousel (5 slides) — Product launch announcement for a DTC skincare brand. Brand kit provided. 4:5 aspect ratio. Caption overlay on slide 1, product shots on slides 2-4, CTA on slide 5.
- Business Card (double-sided) — For a boutique real estate agent. Front: logo, name, title, phone, email. Back: headshot, tagline, QR code to listings. 3.5"×2", CMYK, bleed included.
- Event Flyer (A5, print-ready) — Weekend farmers market. Event name, date/time, location, vendor list (8 vendors), sponsor logos (3), QR code to vendor application. CMYK, 3mm bleed, 300 DPI.
Rules:
- Timer starts when the design app opens.
- Timer stops when the export is complete and file is verified correct.
- Canva: no pre-made templates that exactly match the brief. Designer must build from scratch or modify generic templates.
- Lovart: AI prompting allowed. Variant Explorer allowed. Brand Kit allowed.
- No interruptions. One task per session. Fresh start each time.
Task 1: Instagram Carousel (5 Slides)
Canva — 47 minutes
The designer spent the first 12 minutes browsing Canva's template library for a skincare-appropriate starting point. None matched the brand's aesthetic (minimalist, botanical, muted greens). Settled on a generic "product launch" template and spent 35 minutes customizing:
- Replacing placeholder images with provided product shots (8 min)
- Adjusting font pairings to match the brand kit (6 min)
- Manually aligning elements across 5 slides (11 min)
- Color-picking brand palette values and applying to each element (7 min)
- Export: 3 attempts — first export had inconsistent spacing, second had a misaligned text box, third was correct.
Total: 47 minutes.
Lovart — 8 minutes
The designer pasted the full brief into Lovart's prompt field, attached the brand kit, and included product image URLs.
- First generation (3 variants): 45 seconds
- Selected Variant B, used "Refine" to adjust CTA placement: 1 minute
- Duplicated slide 2 layout to slides 3-4, swapping product images via smart-replace: 2 minutes
- Ran Multi-Format Export (added Story and Pinterest formats): 30 seconds
- Visual QA: 3 minutes 45 seconds
Total: 8 minutes.
Time saved: 83%.
Task 2: Business Card (Double-Sided)
Canva — 34 minutes
Business cards in Canva require manual bleed setup, which the designer had to look up (Canva's business card templates don't always auto-set bleed correctly for print). The QR code generation required a separate tool (QR Monkey), then importing the PNG back into Canva.
- Template search and selection: 5 min
- Front side layout and text: 9 min
- Back side layout with headshot and QR integration: 12 min
- Manual bleed adjustment and CMYK conversion check: 4 min
- Export (PDF with bleed and crop marks): 4 min
Total: 34 minutes.

Lovart — 5 minutes
- Prompt with full business card spec, attached brand kit, headshot, and QR destination URL: 30 seconds
- Lovart auto-generated the QR code and embedded it on the back side layout
- First generation offered 3 double-sided variants: 40 seconds
- Selected Variant A, minor text tweak (phone number formatting): 1 minute
- Export with print presets (PDF/X-1a, CMYK, 3mm bleed, crop marks): 1 minute
- QA: 1 minute 50 seconds
Total: 5 minutes.
Time saved: 85%.
Task 3: Event Flyer (A5, Print-Ready)
Canva — 52 minutes
The flyer was the most complex task — 8 vendor names, 3 sponsor logos, QR code, and print specifications. Canva's template library had "event flyer" options, but none accommodated 8 vendors + sponsors in a readable layout.
- Template search (gave up after 8 min, started from scratch): 8 min
- Layout construction (grid, sections, hierarchy): 18 min
- Vendor list formatting and sponsor logo placement: 12 min
- QR code generation (external tool) and placement: 3 min
- Print spec verification (bleed, CMYK, resolution): 5 min
- Export: first attempt had incorrect bleed margin, second attempt had a sponsor logo at RGB instead of CMYK, third was correct: 6 min
Total: 52 minutes.
Lovart — 11 minutes
- Pasted full brief including vendor names, sponsor logo URLs, QR destination: 1 minute
- First generation (3 variants): 55 seconds
- Selected the best layout, used "Refine" to adjust vendor list hierarchy: 2 minutes
- Replaced one sponsor logo with updated version via smart-replace: 1 minute
- Export with print presets: 1 minute
- QA (checked bleed, CMYK, text readability, sponsor logo fidelity): 5 minutes 5 seconds
Total: 11 minutes.
Time saved: 79%.
The Full Picture
What This Actually Means
AI isn't just faster — it's faster at the parts that don't add creative value. The Canva time was dominated by: template hunting, manual alignment, color-matching, export-error fixing. None of those activities improve the design. They're friction.
Lovart eliminated that friction. The 109 minutes saved across three tasks weren't saved on "design thinking." They were saved on busywork.
The counterpoint: Canva gives you total pixel-level control. For designers who want that control, the time is the point. But for the 80% of users who just need a professional, on-brand design — fast — the 82% time savings rewrites the value equation.
One caveat: this test used an experienced Lovart prompter. A first-time AI design user would take longer — perhaps double — as they learn prompting patterns. Even at 16 minutes for the carousel, that's still 66% faster than Canva. The learning curve pays for itself within a week of regular use.
